Events and support

These are some of the services we offer to women who want to become leaders, or who are already in senior positions:

Leadership seminars:

In June 2009 the UKRC piloted some leadership training with the British Pharmalogical Society's Women in Pharmacology Committee. Later in the year we will run training on a range of leadership skills, open to members of GetSET Women.

Dr Isla Mackenzie, Senior Clinical Trials Physician and member of the BPS women in Pharmacology explains why women-only leadership training is important:
"Research has shown that men and women have different leadership styles. A course tailored to women may help to give women the confidence and skills to improve their leadership."

Professional Development:

We offer training in a range of relevant professional skills and have a regular calendar of events.

Mentoring:

Being supported by a mentor can help at any stage of your career: just starting out, as you begin to get promoted, and when you are at a senior level. We sometimes run mentoring specifically for women wanting senior positions, and we also welcome women leaders who want to mentor others.

Your employer or professional body may run a mentoring scheme, and if they don’t put them in contact with us – we help organisations with setting up their own programmes. You can also contact MentorSET for an independent mentoring service. See our mentoring pages for more information.

Public Appointments:

We offer seminars and a mentoring programme for women who would like to find out more about playing a role in public life.  We advertise public appointments on our website, and circulate news about these and vacancies on committees and trustee bodies to members of GetSET Women.

Professor Averil MacDonald (right) took part in UKRC's 'Mentoring for public life' scheme in 2008.
"When you’ve got used to being in a senior position, it can be hard to face possible rejection when you apply for a new role. But you have to take those risks."
Averil now has positions with the National Museum of Science and Industry and the Science in Society Advisory Panel at the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Many of our partner organisations run ‘ambassador’ and role model schemes. We can put you in touch with these. They offer useful experience in public speaking, and broaden your networks. At UKRC we often involve women as speakers in events, and we welcome women willing to be ‘case studies’.

Media training:

We offer occasional training in media skills for women wanting a higher profile as case studies, spokeswomen or experts. These are open to GetSET Women members.

Networking:

Our annual conference and many other events are excellent networking opportunities. Join GetSET Women to keep informed of the latest events and opportunities, and to expand your range of contacts. Our Connect project works extensively with ‘women in SET’ organisations. See also our pages on networking.

Women of Outstanding Achievement Award:

Our annual award for six women who have played an outstanding role in science, engineering, technology or the built environment.

Other awards:

UKRC actively supports a number of other awards for women of achievement in SET.
